Five signs your equipment may be the problem. A quick five minute self check will go a long way.
Every golfer asks themselves the same question after a bad round: “What went wrong today? Was it my swing, or my clubs?” We hear that question all the time. Golfers tell us, “My irons are all over the place.” “I’ve lost so much distance with my driver.” “I’m just going to buy a new one.” Most of the time, they think buying something new or following the latest tip from a golf influencer is the answer. Here are five signs your mishits may not be caused by your swing at all. It could actually be your equipment, and every one of these can be checked on the course or at the range.

Your misses are wide, not just wrong
Everyone hits a bad shot, watch where yours go. If your shots are going both right and left, that usually means your shaft is the problem. Incorrect shaft flex is mostly likely the reason. Having the correct shaft for your swing will greatly decrease your dispersion and tighten up your game. There are not enough tips and swing changes to cure incorrect shafts in your clubs.

One club, three different yardages
Your 7 iron goes 150, then 138, then 155. Inconsistent yardages usually means the club is not right for your game. The length of your clubs could also be too short or too long for you. You could be playing blades when you need Game Improvement iron. When your bag is right for you, yardages will be way more consistent. Consistency is not perfection, but knowing you have the correct equipment takes a huge factor out of the equation!

Do your clubs feel like a set?
Pull two irons from your bag and waggle each one. If one feels like light or heavier than the other, they probably are. That difference you are feeling is the “swing weight.” Most golfers have never heard of this but it is the key to the feel of your clubs during the swing. “Swing Weight has as much bearing as flex does in a golf club.” Off-the-rack sets are rarely balanced Swing Weight wise. We balance “every single golf club” on every club that comes though our shop. All other golf shops charge at least $10 a club for the same work.

Good swings, bad contact
Your shots are thin, fat or off the toe, even when your swing feels right. The problem could be length or flex but a common reason could be your LIE ANGLE. Even with the correct club length, shots coming off toward the heel or toe usually means the lie angle is off. Correcting your lie angle will also change the spin and direction of your shots. When you come to our facility we can give you a test that will show us if you have the correct lie angle and if you don’t, we can adjust your iron heads right there on the spot!

New driver, same problem?
The ads promised distance. The reviews agreed. We see it constantly: “Most companies really can’t sell distance, they are all already pushed to the limit. All they can do is give you more forgiveness and ways to control the spin.” To get the most out of your $699 driver, you need to have the correct shaft for your swing and it has to have the correct length, loft and lie. The club setting on your driver’s adapter is also as important. Dialing in your driver will give you the best chance for Longer and Straighter drives and will make your new driver purchase worth more than you expected!!

One sign might just be a bad day. Two or more, and it’s time to take a closer look at your equipment before you spend another dollar on lessons or a new club.
